EHLP Hits the Road for First Showcase of the Season

TEWKSBURY, MA -- The EHL team capped off a busy week with a win over the New Hampshire Avalanche at the first EHL showcase of this season. The EHLP team kept busy as well, winning 1 of their 3 games that took place this past weekend.

On Wednesday, the EHL squad hosted the defending EHL Champions, as the New Hampshire Avalanche came down at Stoneham Arena for the 1st of 6 matchups between the 2 teams. After a tough 1st period, the Rangers found themselves down 4-0 going into the intermission. After a scoreless middle frame, Chris Crowley got the Rangers on the board for his first tally of the young season. However, time ran out on the home team as they fell to the Avalanche by a final of 5-1.

After a few days off, the boys traveled down to Walpole on Sunday for the first EHL league-wide showcase of the season. On day #1, the Rangers faced-off against the Seahawks Hockey Club for their 1st of 3 matches with the conference opponent this season. After a scoreless 1st half, the Seahawks broke the silence with around 8 minutes remaining in the game. Despite outshooting the Seahawks 34-30, the Rangers couldn't find the back of the net and fell by a final of 1-0. Ben Parker stopped 29 shots in the losing effort.

The squad returned to the rink the very next morning and faced-off against the Avalanche on day #2 of the EHL Showcase. This time against the Avalanche, there was a much different result as Levi Hensley and Erik Nilsson notched power-play goals just 13 seconds apart to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead near the end of the 1st half. However, the Avalanche would cut the lead to one before the end of the frame. The Rangers then came out strong in the 2nd half with John Grealish and Jonah Nash scoring to give the squad a little insurance. Aiden Curry was solid between the pipes, stopping 26 shots in the winning effort.

The weekend kicked-off for the Rangers with a matchup against the Walpole Express at Rodman Arena. This was the 1st meeting between the 2 teams this season, and began a big 3 in 3 weekend for the Rangers. This game followed a unique scoring pattern as the 2 teams combined for 6 goals, all of which came in the 2nd period. It was Walpole who got on the board first, followed by 2 goals from the Rangers, and then 3 straight tallies for the Express. Steve Johnson and Xander Wardlaw had the goals for the Rangers, while Ryan Bevan made 36 saves in a losing effort between the pipes.

On Saturday, the Rangers hosted the Valley Jr. Warriors for the 1st of 6 matchups this season. Luke Marsh got the Rangers on the board first with a goal with just over 2 minutes into the game. The Warriors responded with a goal of their own, but that was it for the rest of the contest. Levi Hensley converted at the end of a power-play and the Rangers didn't look back from there as Saunders Penn added another goal for the Rangers at the end of the frame and they took a 3-1 lead into the intermission. The boys came out and dominated the 2nd period, outshooting the Warriors 14-3 and scoring 4 goals in the process, as Marsh, Matt Orlando, Justin Sorabella, and Nick Weaver all found the back of the net in the middle frame. Marsh then completed his hat-trick just a minute into the 3rd period to put the Rangers up 8-1. Johnson and Arjoms Jankovics added 2 more goals to their lead as the Rangers won by a final score of 10-1. Bobby McCloskey stopped 18 shots in the winning effort., and Josh Barton collected a trio of assists to his name.

The squad went back to work the very next day for a matchup with the New England Wolves in Laconia. Sunday’s matchup marked the 1st of six battles this season. The Wolves jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but both Jankovics and Marsh responded with goals at the end of the 2nd frame to cut the deficit down to just a single goal. However, the Wolves found the back of the net early in the 3rd period to make it a 4-2 game. Despite a late power-play goal from Johnson, the Rangers fell to the Wolves by a final score of 4-3. McCloskey was busy in net stopping 32 shots in the loss.
